Boats docked in front o of colorful buildings. Visit the Faroe Islands

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Faroe Islands is home to some of the most breathtaking nature you’ll ever see! The islands are a territory of Denmark and are one of the friendliest places you will ever visit. The second you step onto the island, you will be surrounded by the greenest cliffs and the freest nature. You must visit the Faroe Islands if you love breathtaking views and interacting with friendly locals!

How To get to the Faroe Islands

By Flight: Flying into the Faroe Islands is much easier than you may think, especially with new flights opening up directly from the US! You can fly nonstop from certain European destinations such as Denmark, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, Oslo, and Paris! If you are flying from the US, chances are you will have a layover in one of these European cities before flying to the islands.

In August 2023, Atlantic Airways temporarily opened direct flights from NY Stewart International Airport to the Faroe Islands (Vágar Airport). This may lead to more direct flights to the Faroe Islands soon!

By Ferry: The Smyril Line has a ferry that travels to the Faroe Islands from Iceland and Denmark. If you enjoy a slower trip into the islands, then this may be the route for you!

When you arrive at Vágar Airport, head over to the information desk to buy a bus and ferry pass! You can use the card for the number of days you are visiting, the longer you stay the higher the price of the card but it is worth it to have an unlimited amount of bus and ferry rides.

When to Visit

The best months to visit the Faroe Islands are between April and September. The weather can be very unpredictable but your best bet to go when the weather is at its warmest is between June and August!

The puffins leave the islands around September and return in April. So, if your goal is to see the many many puffins actively flying around the cliffs, you should plan to go between April – September!

Language

The national language of the Faroe Islands is Faroese. You will have no problem communicating with locals if you only speak English.

WHERE TO STAY

First, you will want to decide what kind of lodging you are looking for in the Faroe Islands. No matter how you want to stay, either by hotel, vacation rental, or camping, you can’t go wrong! You will most likely want to stay in Tórshavn, which is the capital city. This is where a majority of restaurants, hotels, and activities are located.

Here are a few suggestions for places to stay!

This Airbnb is perfectly located at the center of Tórshavn! Up to two guests can stay here and is a great home base to have while you spend the day exploring the islands.

A hotel is the right option if you want more information on what to see from locals. While rental properties are great, you often don’t come in direct contact with a local who can give you the ins and outs! Hotel Hafnia has a delicious cafe attached to it and has very friendly staff that are ready to help you make the best of your stay!

If camping is more your style, the Faroe Islands is a wonderful place to do so! You can choose from many camping sites all across the islands. I have personally experienced the campsite in Eiði and highly recommend it for the fact it is located on the coolest soccer field ever.

WHAT TO EAT

When you visit the Faroe Islands, you must try skerpikjøt which is fermented lamb, the national food of the islands! Here are also a few restaurant suggestions:

Located in Tórshavn, ROKS is the sister restaurant to KOKS which is the first Michelin-starred restaurant in the Faroe Islands. KOKS is temporarily closed until 2025, but ROKS will still have just as delicious seafood cuisine!

This cafe is located inside Hotel Hafnia and has several tasty food options. You will not find seafood options here but mostly bagels, burgers, and salads. If you’re a coffee drinker, this is also the place to grab a coffee to go!

For reasonably priced steak, you’ll want to dine at Angus Steakhouse. Angus Steakhouse is a Faroese chain restaurant with one location in Tórshavn and the other located in Klaksvík.
